SMS QR Code: Start a Text Message With One Scan
An SMS QR code opens the messaging app with a phone number and message already typed in. It is useful for keyword opt-ins, quick feedback and support requests. The person reviews the text and taps Send themselves.
How SMS codes are encoded
The generator writes the widely supported SMSTO format: SMSTO:+821012345678:JOIN. The part after the second colon is the message body. Phone numbers are normalised to digits with an optional leading plus sign, so formatting such as spaces or brackets is removed automatically.
When to use SMS instead of a link
- Opt-in campaigns where people text a keyword to a short code or business number.
- Places with weak mobile data but working SMS, such as rural venues.
- Service desks that already handle requests by text.
- Voting or check-in systems that read a keyword from incoming messages.
Good practice
Tell people what will happen before they scan, for example Text JOIN to get updates. Standard message rates may apply to the sender, so mention it where required by local rules. Use the international format for the number if the code may be scanned abroad, and keep the message to a few words so the code stays light.
If you collect numbers for marketing, follow the consent and opt-out rules in your country.
How to make it
- Open Create and choose SMS.
- Enter the recipient number, ideally with the country code.
- Type the message or keyword the sender should send.
- Add a frame with clear instructions, check the scan test and download the code.
Frequently asked questions
Does scanning an SMS QR code send a message automatically?
No. Phones only open a draft. The person must tap Send, so nothing is sent without their action.
Do SMS QR codes work on iPhone?
Yes. iOS and Android camera apps both recognise the SMSTO format and open the Messages app with the number and text filled in.
Can I use it for WhatsApp instead?
WhatsApp uses its own link format. Choose the Social media type and select WhatsApp, which creates a wa.me link for the number.
