Phone QR Code: Let People Call You With One Scan

A phone QR code opens the dialer with your number already entered, so callers avoid typos and only need to tap Call. It suits shop signs, service vehicles, flyers and equipment labels where a quick call matters.

What the code contains

The content is a tel: URI as defined for telephone links, for example tel:+442079460000. Phones recognise the scheme and hand it to the dialer. The generator strips spaces, dashes and brackets and keeps a leading plus sign so the number works internationally.

Formatting the number

  • Use the full international format starting with + and the country code, without the leading zero of the area code where your country drops it.
  • Toll-free and short numbers often work only inside one country; mention that next to the code.
  • Extensions are not reliably supported across phones, so use a direct line where possible.
  • Print the number in plain text next to the code for people without a camera handy.

Design tips

A phone code holds very little data, so it stays compact and scans well even at about 2 cm. A frame with Call us or a phone icon makes the purpose obvious. For vehicles or outdoor signs, scale the code up so it can be scanned from a few metres away; a rough rule is a code width of about one tenth of the scanning distance.

How to make it

  1. Open Create and choose Phone.
  2. Enter the number including the country code.
  3. Choose colours and add a frame such as Tap to call.
  4. Confirm the scan test, then export SVG or PDF for printing.

Frequently asked questions

Does scanning a phone QR code call automatically?

No. Phones open the dialer and wait for the user to tap Call, so no call is placed without consent.

Can I change the phone number later?

No. The number is part of the static code. If you expect it to change, use a URL code pointing to a contact page you can update.

What is the difference between a phone code and a vCard code?

A phone code only starts a call. A vCard code saves a full contact entry with name, numbers and email, which is better for business cards.
