rMQR Code Generator
rMQR, rectangular Micro QR, is a QR-family code shaped as a long strip, so it fits narrow spaces like cable tags, test tubes and printed edges where a square code would be too tall. Enter your data and the app chooses a suitable rectangle.
What rMQR is
rMQR was introduced by Denso Wave and standardised as ISO/IEC 23941 in 2022. It keeps the familiar QR encoding modes (numeric, alphanumeric, byte and Kanji) but arranges modules in a rectangle with a height of only 7 to 17 modules. That lets it carry much more data than Micro QR on a strip-shaped area.
Sizes and structure
- 32 sizes, written as R(height)x(width), from R7x43 to R17x139; heights are 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 or 17 modules.
- One full finder pattern on the left and a smaller sub-finder pattern at the opposite corner, plus timing patterns along the edges.
- Error correction level M or H.
- Capacity up to 361 digits, 219 alphanumeric characters or 150 bytes in R17x139 at level M.
- Quiet zone of two modules on all sides.
Where to use it and printing tips
Good candidates are cable and wire markers, sample vials, the spine of a box, PCB edges and shelf strips. Printed at 0.25 mm per module, an R7x43 is about 1.75 mm tall and 10.75 mm long plus quiet zone. Keep high contrast, avoid wrapping the code around tight curves along its length, and verify with ISO/IEC 15415. rMQR is newer than QR, so confirm that your scanners support it; QR & Barcode Studio's scanner can read it, but many phone camera apps cannot yet.
How to make it
- Choose rMQR in the barcode generator.
- Enter the data, keeping it short for narrow labels.
- Select automatic sizing, or fix the height to fit your label.
- Export SVG, PDF or PNG, or batch-print from CSV.
- Scan a sample on the actual label material.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Micro QR and rMQR?
Micro QR is square and holds very little data. rMQR is rectangular and holds much more on a narrow strip.
Can my phone read rMQR?
Support is still limited in built-in camera apps; use a scanner app that lists rMQR, such as this one.
Which error correction should I use?
Level M for clean labels; H when the label may be scratched or partly covered.
