Which code should I use?

Industry uses different code systems depending on the job and the equipment. QR is one kind of 2D code — here is how the main families compare.

2D codes

  • Data Matrix

Packs lots of data into a tiny area on parts, medical devices and electronics; widely used for Direct Part Marking (DPM) engraved on the product.

    Guides
  • PDF417

Rectangular stacked code on shipping labels, ID cards and licences.

    Guides
  • Aztec

Found on tickets and boarding passes where print space is limited; no quiet zone needed.

    Guides
  • MaxiCode

Designed for high-speed parcel sorting in logistics.

    Guides
  • Micro QR · rMQR

QR variants for very small (Micro QR) or long, narrow (rMQR) spaces.

    Guides
  • GS1 DataMatrix · GS1 QR

    Guides
  • ITF-14

Printed on corrugated cases to identify the packaging unit (GTIN-14).

    Guides
  • GS1 DataBar

    Guides
  • Code 39 · Code 128

Part numbers, asset tags and inventory labels for internal use.

    Guides

RFID, NFC & tags (separate hardware)

Strictly speaking these are not printed barcodes, but they are compared with them on site. They need dedicated readers or tags and are handled separately from this tool (NFC tag reading is available on supported Android browsers).

  • RFID

Reads tags by radio, many items at once and without line of sight — access control, inventory and logistics tracking.

  • NFC

Tap-to-read tags for product information, authentication and device setup.

  • BLE beacons

Broadcast location or equipment information over short-range radio instead of being scanned.

GS1 codes must follow GS1 data rules and use identification numbers (GTIN, SSCC, GLN) licensed to your company by your GS1 member organisation. This tool validates the data format; it does not issue or register numbers.

Professional barcodes in seconds

  • 14 symbologies

    EAN-13/8, UPC-A/E, ISBN, Code 128, Code 39, ITF, ITF-14, Codabar, GS1-128, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec.

  • Check digits handled

Leave out the last digit and we calculate it; enter a wrong one and we tell you the correct value.

  • Exact sizing

Set bar height and print width in millimetres; export vector PDF/SVG for labels and packaging.

  • Verified output

Each barcode is decoded by our scanner engine before download.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a barcode number for my product here?

No. Retail numbers (GTIN/EAN/UPC) must be licensed from GS1 in your country. This tool draws barcodes for numbers you already own and validates them.

Which barcode should I use for inventory?

Code 128 is the most common choice: it's compact, supports letters and digits, and every scanner reads it.

What is a check digit?

The last digit of EAN/UPC codes is calculated from the others so scanners can detect misreads. We compute and verify it automatically.
